Marblehead High School announced this week that Phill Witt will take over as the varsity girls basketball coach, replacing longtime mentor Paul Moran. Witt, a Swampscott native who once wore Moran’s jersey as a player, steps into the role with a clear vision for the program.
Witt’s connection to the team runs deep; he played under Moran during his high school years and has served as a teacher and coach in the Marblehead community since 2019. His familiarity with the players and the town’s culture gives him a unique perspective as he builds on the standards set by his predecessor.
A Coach Shaped by Mentorship
Growing up in the shadow of Moran’s program, Witt absorbed not only tactical lessons but also a philosophy centered on relationships. He credits mentors such as Jeff Newhall, T.J. Baril and John “Doc” Beaulieu for shaping his approach, emphasizing that basketball is as much about character as it is about skill.
Since 2019, Witt has balanced his role as a classroom teacher with assistant coaching duties, gradually earning the trust of players and parents alike. His player‑oriented style focuses on open communication, individualized development and a competitive yet supportive environment.
Aiming for Playoff Contention
Witt has already begun organizing summer workouts and captain‑led practice sessions, signaling an early commitment to continuity. He plans to finalize a coaching staff that reflects both his technical background and his emphasis on mentorship, ensuring that the team retains the momentum built over recent seasons.
The new coach also leverages his middle‑school connections, maintaining strong relationships with many of the current roster members. This continuity, he believes, will smooth the transition and foster a sense of ownership among the players as they chase playoff aspirations.
Beyond the court, Witt holds a bachelor of science in sports administration from the University of Miami and has coached at St. Mary’s of Lynn, experiences that broaden his tactical toolkit. He hopes to translate those diverse insights into a cohesive strategy for Marblehead.
With the backing of Marblehead High School and the broader community, Witt’s appointment marks a pivotal moment for the program. His blend of personal history, coaching education and player‑first philosophy positions him to sustain the school’s athletic standards while steering the team toward future success.
