Joe Barrer Joins George Washington Men’s Basketball as Assistant Coach

Former G League champion brings two decades of coaching experience to the Colonials

The George Washington University announced Tuesday that Joe Barrer will join the Colonials' men's basketball program as an assistant coach for the upcoming 2026‑27 season. The move signals the program's intent to bolster its coaching ranks with a veteran who has navigated both professional and collegiate basketball environments.

A veteran with G League pedigree

Barrer's journey began at St. Ambrose University, where he played college basketball and helped his team capture multiple MCC championships while competing in NAIA National Tournaments. He later earned a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from St. Ambrose and a Master’s in Fitness & Health Promotion from George Mason University, foundations that have informed his coaching philosophy.

His professional coaching career includes stints as head coach of the Birmingham Squadron, the G League affiliate of the New Orleans Pelicans, and the Orlando Magic's Lakeland franchise, where he guided the team to the 2021 NBA G League title. Prior to that, he served as director of basketball operations at George Mason University and held coaching positions at the Iowa Energy, Bethel University, Truman State University, and Assumption High School.

Barrer brings more than 20 years of experience to Washington, D.C., where he will work closely with head coach Patrick Ewing and the rest of the staff to develop player talent, refine scouting strategies, and enhance the program's competitive edge. Athletic director Chris Caputo expressed confidence that Barrer's blend of analytical insight and hands‑on leadership will elevate the Colonials' performance on and off the court.
