Friday’s Action on the Diamond
Friday night brought a full slate of high school baseball and softball contests across the region, with teams such as Carroll, Atlantic, Winterset, Newton, Pella, Van Meter, Lewis Central, Coon Rapids Bayard, AC/GC, St. Albert and others taking the field.
The much‑anticipated matchup between Carroll and Atlantic, however, will have to wait, as officials announced a postponement to July 7, giving both programs extra preparation time before the contest resumes.
Winterset capitalized on the schedule, defeating Newton 6‑3 in a game that saw the Warriors pull ahead early and maintain a steady lead through the later innings.
Pella also secured a close victory, edging out Van Meter 4‑3, with a late rally that turned a tied game into a modest win for the Dutch.
Lewis Central proved dominant in two separate games, routing CBAL 12‑1 and then overwhelming CBTJ 15‑0, showcasing a potent offense and a pitching staff that kept opponents at bay.
Softball Highlights
In softball, Coon Rapids Bayard faced AC/GC in a contest that went the distance, while Lewis Central posted a 13‑5 win over CBAL and a 15‑0 shutout of CBTJ, mirroring their baseball team’s efficiency.
St. Albert added two more wins, beating CBAL 12‑2 and CBTJ 7‑4, underscoring the team’s consistency across both sports.
The Carlisle Tournament, originally slated for the weekend, was ultimately canceled, a decision that will affect several scheduled matchups and leave teams scrambling to adjust their calendars.
With the schedule reshaped by postponements and cancellations, coaches and players alike are focusing on the upcoming weeks, hoping to translate early-season momentum into later‑season success.
