NASCAR Returns to Joliet for Fourth of July
After a two‑year hiatus, NASCAR roared back to Joliet just in time for the Independence Day weekend, sparking excitement among local fans who had not seen a stock‑car event since 2019.
The centerpiece of the weekend is the Cup Series race scheduled for Sunday at 5 p.m., but the schedule also includes a series of supporting events that keep the track buzzing from Saturday morning through Sunday night.
Mayor Terry D’Arcy highlighted the surge in ticket sales as a clear sign of demand, noting that the speedway’s campgrounds were fully booked, a testament to the influx of traveling supporters.
Fans have traveled from across the country, including Jim St. Clair, who drove from Brighton, Colorado, to experience the action live at the Illinois venue.
Retired driver Kenny Wallace, who celebrated his 900th NASCAR race in Joliet, praised the track’s condition and the atmosphere, saying the venue has been meticulously maintained despite the recent lull in events.
Wallace also reflected on the series’ recent history in the Chicago area, recalling two years of downtown Chicago street races and emphasizing the contrast with the traditional oval at Chicagoland Speedway.
Local officials and organizers remain optimistic that the strong attendance and positive feedback will cement NASCAR’s presence in Joliet for future editions, ensuring the sport continues to thrive in the region.
