Tournament director Jamie Baker has said that such distractions do not detract from the overall atmosphere, emphasizing that the crowd’s energy remains focused on the matches themselves.
Players, too, have been drawn into the football buzz. Spanish competitor Rafael Jodar, who enjoys discussing the World Cup with his peers, admits he steers clear of the topic with Italian opponents whose nation failed to qualify.
The schedule of the tournament includes a high‑profile England versus Mexico last‑16 clash that is set to kick off at 1:00 am UK time on Monday, a slot that has prompted the government to grant pubs a special licence to stay open until 5:00 am.
Although a few organizers have considered shifting certain matches to avoid the late‑night clash, there is little expectation that Wimbledon’s overall programme will be altered, despite the mounting pressure from overlapping events.
Outside of tennis, other sports have also felt the ripple effect; a T20 cricket fixture was recently rescheduled to prevent a direct clash with a World Cup fixture, illustrating how the football tournament’s reach extends across disparate sporting calendars.
