Baseball America’s latest prospect rankings have turned the spotlight on a handful of players who share a common thread: formative years in Connecticut. The organization’s updated Top 30 lists for each Major League Baseball franchise reveal a cluster of talent that once wore UConn colors before embarking on professional journeys.
Andrew Sears, a former UConn left‑hander, occupies the No. 16 spot in the Detroit Tigers’ organizational chart. Since returning from injury, Sears has posted a 1.54 ERA, a 0.86 WHIP and 15 strikeouts across 112⅔ innings, signaling a promising rebound that could solidify his place in the Tigers’ rotation plans.
Kyler Fedko, another UConn alumnus, sits at No. 21 on the Minnesota Twins’ list. After a dominant stretch in Triple‑A St. Paul — where he batted .286 with 15 homers and a .950 OPS in 58 games — Fedko earned his first big‑league call‑up, illustrating the rapid ascent of the former Husky.
Connecticut Talent Across the Minors
The ripple effect of Connecticut’s collegiate program continues with Cam Maldonado, a Wolcott native, ranked No. 24 within the San Francisco Giants’ system. Maldonado is currently hitting .281 with 11 homers and 45 RBI in 56 games at Class‑A San Jose. Colton Shaw, a former Yale right‑hander, appears at No. 29 for the Seattle Mariners, posting a 4‑3 record, 4.38 ERA and 65 strikeouts in 63⅔ innings at Class‑A Everett. Daniel Bucciero, from Ridgefield, holds the No. 30 spot in the Oakland Athletics’ rankings, batting .287 with nine homers and 11 steals in 71 games at Class‑A Stockton. Hiro Wyatt, a Westport product, is positioned No. 26 in the Kansas City Royals’ organization, though he now sits on the 60‑day injured list after a 3.21 ERA in seven starts for Class‑A Columbia.
Not all former prospects have maintained their footing. Frank Mozzicato, once a top Royals prospect, has been removed from the club’s Top 30 list after struggling with control issues and an 8.40 ERA, having walked 43 batters in 45 innings.
