A Milestone at The Glen
During a ceremony at The Glen Club, State Senator Tom O’Mara alongside Assemblymembers Phil Palmesano and Chris Friend formally presented a legislative resolution commemorating the 40th anniversary of NASCAR competition at Watkins Glen International.
The document, passed unanimously by both the New York State Senate and Assembly earlier this session, lauds the speedway as one of the world’s premier motorsports venues and underscores its role as a cornerstone of the regional economy and tourism sector.
Senator O’Mara, Assemblymember Palmesano and Assemblymember Friend highlighted the track’s enduring cultural imprint, noting that its annual race weekend draws enthusiasts from across the United States and generates substantial economic activity for the Finger Lakes and Southern Tier.
A Legacy of Tourism and Economic Growth
The resolution also references the historic milestones that shaped the partnership: NASCAR’s inaugural race at the circuit took place in 1957, and the event became a permanent fixture on the racing calendar in 1986, cementing the track’s status as a staple of American motorsport.
State officials emphasized that the continued success of the NASCAR weekend not only celebrates sporting tradition but also fuels job creation, hospitality revenue and broader community vitality throughout the region.
Dawn Burlew, President of Watkins Glen International, accepted the resolution on behalf of the facility, expressing pride in having hosted NASCAR events in New York State for four decades and thanking the Legislature for its recognition.
