St. Mary’s Ryken High School has named Pete Staufenberger as the new head coach of its girls soccer program, marking his second tenure with the school. The announcement underscores the institution’s commitment to cultivating a competitive and development-focused soccer environment.
Staufenberger brings more than 40 years of coaching experience across high school, collegiate, club, and Olympic Development Program settings. He previously led the school’s girls program from 2018 to 2020 and has served as an assistant coach for the St. Mary’s College of Maryland women’s soccer team since 2021, where he also guided the U‑16 Girls Premier side.
A Development‑Centric Coaching Philosophy
Central to Staufenberger’s approach is the belief that every player can improve both skill-wise and personally. He emphasizes confidence, preparation, defensive organization, and the creation of scoring opportunities, elements he refers to as the program’s "SMR style" of play.
The coach also plans to forge stronger connections with local soccer entities, including the Maryland Rush Soccer Club and the Maryland Olympic Development Program, to create a sustainable pipeline of talent and shared expertise throughout Southern Maryland.
Staufenberger envisions a culture rooted in pride, accountability, and competitiveness, aiming to help young women become not only better players but also stronger teammates. His return is scheduled for the first week of July 2026, promising a renewed focus on building a championship‑caliber program.
