Reviving a program after scandal
Harris arrived in Ann Arbor at a turbulent moment, when the Ed Martin scandal and subsequent NCAA sanctions had left the Wolverines in disarray. His immediate presence injected energy, and as a freshman he exploded for 22 points in his second career game, quickly becoming one of the most prolific scoring freshmen in school history, eclipsing the 500‑point mark in his debut season.
In his sophomore year he posted a career‑high average of 16.9 points per game, confronting the nation’s second‑toughest schedule, and led Michigan to its first NCAA Tournament appearance under coach John Beilein. The Wolverines pulled off upsets over fourth‑seeded UCLA and fourth‑seeded Duke, and Harris contributed 23 points, seven rebounds and six assists in that historic tournament opener.
