From Court to Badge
Jordan "Tiny" Wilmore, a 7‑foot‑3 former basketball player, is on track to become the tallest police officer in Texas after passing the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement licensing exam.
Wilmore’s athletic career began at Northwestern State University and continued at Texas A&M‑Commerce, where he honed his skills before moving into professional basketball. After a stint overseas, he decided to trade the hardwood for a badge, citing a desire to serve his community in a different capacity.
A Setback and a Mentor’s Support
His first attempt at the state licensing exam fell just one point short in 2025, a disappointment that could have ended his pursuit. Instead, he returned to study and train, eventually catching the eye of NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal, who offered sponsorship and guidance through another academy.
The mentorship proved pivotal. Under O’Neal’s support, Wilmore completed the required coursework and earned the confidence of the Kemah Police Department, according to Chief Raymond Garivey, who praised the applicant’s perseverance.
Swearing‑In and a New Chapter
Wilmore will be sworn in on Tuesday, July 7, at 2 p.m. in the Kemah Council Chambers, joining fellow tall officers George Bell and Shaquille O’Neal in a small but notable cohort of high‑stature law‑enforcement professionals.
The ceremony marks not only a personal milestone but also a unique intersection of sports and public safety, illustrating how diverse backgrounds can enrich policing.
