When Major League Baseball introduced Statcast in 2015, it transformed the way teams, analysts, and fans think about the game, turning raw video into a library of quantifiable events.

One of the most discussed concepts is the definition of a hard‑hit ball, which Statcast tags as any contact that leaves the bat at 95 mph or faster.

Equally important is the launch angle sweet spot, a window between eight and 32 degrees that tends to produce the most efficient fly balls.

From there, advanced stats like expected batting average, or xBA, estimate the probability that a given batted ball will become a hit, while xwOBA goes a step further by layering exit velocity, launch angle and sprint speed into a single predictive model.

Another useful snapshot is EV50, which captures the average exit velocity of a batter’s hardest half of balls—or conversely, the softest half of a pitcher’s allowed contacts—offering a quick gauge of overall power or control.

Bat speed, measured at the sweet spot of the bat, is a key driver of exit velocity; a swing that reaches 75 mph or more is generally considered fast enough to generate elite contact.

The vertical angle of that sweet spot at impact, often called attack angle, is most effective when it falls between five and 20 degrees, a range that aligns with what analysts label an Ideal Attack Angle.

Statcast also translates xwOBA into a more familiar ERA scale, producing xERA, a metric that lets teams compare a pitcher’s expected performance directly with traditional ERA.

Defensively, the system highlights players with the fastest reactions and most direct routes in the outfield—a measure dubbed Jump—while any sprint that exceeds 30 ft/sec earns the label of a Bolt.

Together, these metrics paint a richer picture of performance, allowing teams to fine‑tune strategies and giving fans a deeper appreciation of the science behind every swing and sprint.
