The Maryland Board of Public Works has cleared more than $1.18 million in grants aimed at revitalizing sports and recreation infrastructure across a swath of the state.
The allocations span Allegany, Calvert, Dorchester, Frederick, Garrett, and Washington counties, supporting everything from new basketball courts to accessibility upgrades.
Targeted Investments in Key Communities
In Calvert County, funding will remove existing surfaces and construct new basketball courts at Hallowing Point Park, creating a modern venue for youth leagues and community games.
Dorchester County will enhance its School Street Athletic Complex by adding pickleball courts, expanding opportunities for players of all ages.
The Town of New Market in Frederick County plans to purchase 1.56 acres of land for a future soccer field complex, a move designed to meet growing demand for organized play.
Myersville will improve Bullivant Park with additional parking, benches, and picnic areas, aiming to make the space more welcoming for families.
Mount Airy is set to build a paved path at East West Park, improving accessibility for residents with mobility challenges.
Allegany County’s Parris N. Glendening Recreation Complex will receive new lighting for its basketball and pickleball courts, extending usable hours into the evening.
Lonaconing’s Little League Ballfield will be expanded with new pickleball courts, offering a versatile facility for multiple sports.
Garrett County’s Friendsville Elementary School and Washington County’s Sharpsburg Community Park will each construct inclusive playgrounds, ensuring that children of all abilities can play together.
Leadership and Funding Framework
The Board of Public Works, composed of Governor Wes Moore, Treasurer Dereck E. Davis, and Comptroller Brooke E. Lierman, oversees these grants as part of Maryland’s broader commitment to conserving natural resources and providing outdoor recreation opportunities.
By investing in both new construction and accessibility improvements, the state aims to create safer, more inclusive spaces that encourage healthy activity and strengthen community ties across the region.
