Venla Hovi, a Finnish‑born coach with a distinguished playing résumé, currently serves as an assistant coach for the Harvard women’s hockey program.
Her recent stint as a guest coach at the Boston Bruins’ Development Camp offered the NHL franchise a firsthand look at her scouting acumen and player‑development philosophy.
From the ice rinks of Tampere to the NHL’s periphery
Hovi’s hockey journey began on the frozen ponds of Tampere, where she honed her skills before rising through Finland’s elite junior ranks.
Over two decades she amassed more than 200 appearances for the Finnish national team, capturing Olympic bronze in 2010 and 2018 and contributing to multiple World Championship campaigns.
Her club career includes a pivotal role on the Calgary Inferno, where she helped secure the Clarkson Cup, and a pioneering appointment as the first woman to join the Winnipeg Jets’ coaching staff.
Before arriving at Harvard, Hovi headed the Metropolitan Riveters in the Premier Hockey Federation, guiding the team through a competitive season and earning respect for her strategic depth.
Beyond on‑ice achievements, Hovi stresses professionalism and consistency, insisting that athletes excel when their daily habits align with long‑term goals.
Her development work is bolstered by the NHL Coaches’ Association Female Coaches Program, which provides mentorship and resources to aspiring women coaches across North America.
At Harvard, Hovi leverages her extensive scouting network and recruiting experience to attract talent that fits the program’s competitive ethos, while also mentoring players off the ice.
