Mike Wells, a seasoned NBA assistant coach with two championship rings, has accepted a new role on the Ohio State Buckeyes bench, bringing a wealth of professional experience to the college game.
A native of Mount Vernon, Ohio, Wells grew up watching the Buckeyes, a passion that never faded despite years spent coaching abroad, including a stint as head coach of the Adelaide 36ers in Australia's National Basketball League.
His return to the state was driven as much by family considerations as by basketball ambition; his eldest son is about to start at Mount Vernon Nazarene University, and the whole family wanted to be back in the U.S.
Wells was recruited by Jake Diebler, who offered him the assistant position, and the coach described the opportunity as the culmination of a lifelong dream.
A Homecoming for a Buckeye Native
At Ohio State, Wells will concentrate on refining the Buckeyes' offense, which already ranks among the Big Ten’s best in field‑goal percentage and scoring, but he believes there is still room for sharper decision‑making.
He is introducing a concept he calls the ‘.5 decision’, urging players to commit to a move within half a second of receiving the ball, a philosophy he honed while leading teams in the NBA and Down Under.
Amare Bynum, an Ohio State forward, praised Wells, saying he ‘brings a lot’ to the program and that his experience as a head coach adds a fresh perspective.
Wells' championship pedigree, having coached for six different NBA franchises, brings a winning culture that he hopes will rub off on the young Buckeyes roster.
The coaching staff also benefits from his extensive network, which includes contacts in the National Basketball League and the NBA, reinforcing the program’s ties to professional basketball.
