The Colorado Avalanche announced on Thursday that they have signed veteran defenseman Christian Wolanin to a one-year agreement that will carry him through the 2026-27 campaign.
A Familiar Face Returns
While the deal officially places him on the NHL roster, the coaching staff indicated that the majority of his ice time is expected to come with the Colorado Eagles, the team’s American Hockey League affiliate, where he will have the opportunity to fine-tune his defensive play.
Wolanin arrives after a productive season with the Providence Bruins, where he contributed seven goals and 31 points in 53 games, ranking second among defensemen in scoring and first in assists while also topping the power-play tally.
The 31-year-old has previously logged 86 NHL appearances spread across the Vancouver Canucks, Buffalo Sabres, Los Angeles Kings and Ottawa Senators, complementing an extensive AHL résumé that includes stints with the Abbotsford Canucks, Ontario Reign and Belleville Senators.
Beyond his own career, Wolanin follows in the footsteps of his father, Craig Wolanin, who was a member of the 1996 Stanley Cup-winning Colorado Avalanche and recorded 91 points in 364 games for the franchise.
Team officials noted that the signing adds depth to the blue line and connects the current roster with a lineage of championship experience, reinforcing the organization’s defensive outlook for the upcoming season.
