Gavin Kelly Joins Team USA for Inaugural Collegiate Baseball Championship
Gavin Kelly, a junior standout for the West Virginia Mountaineers, has been selected to wear the red, white and blue of Team USA as they head to the inaugural World Collegiate Baseball Championship in Taichung City, Taiwan, from July 11 through July 15.
During the 2024 season Kelly hit .382 with 19 home runs, tying a single‑season program record, and posted a 1.202 OPS while driving in 63 runs and scoring 70 times. His 96 hits placed him among the most prolific hitters in Mountaineer history, trailing only JJ Wetherholt’s 101 hits from the previous year.
Inaugural World Collegiate Baseball Championship
The tournament will unfold over five days in Taichung City, Taiwan, featuring pool play, semifinals and medal games, with the championship game scheduled for July 15.
The United States will open its pool play slate on July 11 against Korea, and the semifinals are set for July 14, leading into the final on July 15.
Kelly’s versatility was on display during training camp, where he logged a .250 average with two doubles, four RBI and two runs scored while seeing action at catcher, second base and right field.
He becomes the second Mountaineer in as many years to earn a spot on the USA Collegiate National Team, following JJ Wetherholt’s selection in 2023, underscoring the program’s growing presence on the international stage.
