The Big Rapids Post 98AA 18U American Legion baseball squad entered a busy weekend with a modest overall record of 4‑11‑1, looking to turn the tide after a string of defeats.
Saturday Slip‑ups
On Saturday the team dropped two games, first falling 1‑0 to the Sandlot/Sluggers 17/18U side after Jake Woudwyk surrendered a single run on seven hits over 6.1 innings, and then losing 8‑0 to the Capital City Kings 17U as starter Aidan Anderson gave up eight runs on four hits in just 2.2 innings.
Despite the setbacks, there were moments of offensive spark, notably a solitary hit from Quin Garrett in the loss to the Sandlot/Sluggers.
Friday Loss and Win
Friday brought a 9‑1 defeat at the hands of Berryhill Post 165, with David Torrey shouldering the pitching loss after allowing eight runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings.
The following day the squad rebounded with a 10‑7 victory over Findlay Post 3. Quin Garrett earned the win on the mound, limiting Findlay to five hits and two runs over three innings, while Emmett Lingeman opened the game with a solid outing that yielded five runs and four hits in three frames.
Key contributions at the plate came from Kurt Wilber, who collected three hits, and Russell Toth and David Torrey, each driving in three runs, helping the team rally from early deficits.
The win also featured six walks, underscoring a patient approach at the plate, though the team’s defense still struggled with several errors.
Looking Forward
Looking ahead, Post 98 is slated to return to action on July 7 when they travel to face the Midland Tribe, a matchup that could provide the momentum needed to climb out of the lower half of the league standings.
