A Season of Resilience
Brian Hoener, the head coach of Marquette Catholic’s boys soccer program, has been honored as the 2025‑2026 Boys Small School Coach of the Year, a testament to his ability to steer a young squad through a demanding season.
The Explorers finished the campaign with a 13‑6‑1 record, mirroring the previous year’s tally, while outscoring opponents 66‑36; eight of those matches ended with clean sheets, underscoring a defensive solidity that belied the team’s inexperience.
Victories over traditional rivals such as Alton, Granite City, Freeburg and Duchesne highlighted the squad’s capacity to compete against larger schools, culminating in a 3‑0 triumph over Maryville Christian that secured the Class 1A regional championship.
Five freshmen and three sophomores formed the core of the lineup, yet they embraced Hoener’s emphasis on discipline and high standards, turning youthful enthusiasm into consistent performances on the pitch.
Although the Explorers fell to elite opponents — including Father McGivney, Belleville Althoff and Columbia — six of their nine defeats came against teams ranked among the state’s top tier, a schedule that forged resilience and tactical maturity.
Hoener’s philosophy, built around maintaining rigorous expectations regardless of age or experience, has become a model for small‑school programs seeking sustainable success.
Looking Ahead
With the core group returning next season, the Explorers are poised to build on this foundation, aiming to translate regional triumph into deeper playoff runs and perhaps a state title.
