A fan‑powered honor roll
Tar Heel 247 has turned a simple idea into a celebration of the Tar Heel legacy, inviting supporters to help shape a permanent tribute at two of the university’s most iconic venues.
The plan calls for plaques, busts and eventually statues to be installed at Kenan Stadium and the Smith Center, turning the stadiums into a living museum of the programs’ rich histories.
Organizers say the effort is meant to be light‑hearted yet meaningful, sparking conversation among alumni, students and casual fans alike.
Tiered recognition
The project is divided into three tiers: statues reserved for the all‑time greats, busts for the next wave of standout players, and plaques for those whose contributions still deserve a place on the wall.
Each tier reflects a different level of impact, ensuring that the honorees span the full breadth of UNC’s athletic heritage.
So far, the list of football candidates includes 38 former players who the editorial team believes are worthy of a plaque, while basketball names are also being considered.
The vote and what comes next
Community members will soon cast their ballots, and the results will be unveiled after the first two tiers are posted, giving fans a direct voice in who receives the honors.
Beyond the plaques, the initiative aims to broaden the honorary space at both venues, allowing future generations to see the names of those who helped define Tar Heel pride.
