Kathryn McLean, a recent graduate of Scituate High, has been honored with Mass Hockey’s prestigious Phil Zona Sportsmanship Award, recognizing her selfless and positive contributions to the Nowell/Scituate/Abington co‑op girls hockey program.
In her scholarship application essay, McLean emphasized that teamwork and sportsmanship are the cornerstones of success both on and off the ice, a philosophy that guided her throughout four years of varsity play.
Next fall she will begin studies in business management at Bryant University, where she hopes to blend her analytical interests with her lifelong passion for the sport.
A Journey Across Every Position
McLean’s love for hockey began at age six, and over the years she has experienced every position on the ice. For the past two seasons she has settled into a defensive role, using her versatility to support the team’s structure and resilience.
Coach’s Commendation
Head coach Tori Dinger praised McLean’s ability to motivate and uplift teammates, noting that her leadership extends beyond game tactics to fostering a supportive locker‑room culture.
Looking ahead, McLean plans to continue coaching hockey, aiming to pass on the same values of teamwork and sportsmanship that earned her the Phil Zona award.
