A Festive Tribute on the Field
The Chautauqua County Office for Aging Services (CCOFAS) took the opportunity of its annual Volunteer of the Year ceremony to spotlight Russ Diethrick, a fixture of the local baseball scene affectionately known as "Mr. Baseball". His dedication to community service earned him the state‑wide title of New York’s Volunteer of the Year, a distinction that underscores the impact of grassroots volunteers.
The celebration is tied to a special partnership between CCOFAS and the region’s beloved baseball team. On July 25, 2026, the organization will host a Christmas‑in‑July themed game that will conclude with a fireworks display, offering free admission to seniors aged 60 and older on a first‑come, first‑served basis at any CCOFAS office.
Holiday Cheer and Community Support
Beyond the game, the event marks the launch of the 2026 Santa for Seniors Campaign, a holiday initiative that provides visits, gifts and meals to older adults who might otherwise spend the season alone. Senior clubs across the county are contributing handmade presents and essential items, while partner churches such as the First Baptist Church of Mayville and Hurlbut Church of Chautauqua are coordinating the effort.
Donors can support the campaign through a variety of channels, including contributions to the Reverend J. Paul Womack Christmas Basket Fund via Facebook, purchases from the First Baptist Church of Mayville’s Amazon Wish List, and the donation of postage stamps to encourage letter writing and social connection among seniors.
Attendees will also find an information table at the July 25 game where CCOFAS staff will share details about its programs and services. The organization hopes the festive atmosphere will not only honor volunteers but also inspire broader community involvement in caring for the elderly.
