A New Era for the Saints
Tan Yildizoglu, a senior point guard from Istanbul, is entering his final college season with the Siena Saints, bringing a blend of international pedigree and proven clutch performance that helped Turkey defeat Team USA in the U19 Men’s World Cup.
After stints at the University of the Pacific and Virginia Military Institute, he transferred to Siena, where he now studies business while averaging 4.7 assists per game last season and 3.9 this year at VMI.
Mentoring the Next Generation
Yildizoglu’s experience crossing continents has become a catalyst for the team’s younger contingent. He is currently guiding German freshman forward Yannis Steger, Australian wing Tim Ibukunoluwa, New Zealand guard Mana Martin, and Spanish center Andres Amon, helping them adjust to the pace and physicality of American college basketball.
Coach Smith’s Vision
Under new head coach Nevada Smith, the Saints are poised for a breakout campaign. Yildizoglu says the program’s trajectory excites him, and he believes the squad can achieve “great things” as they blend veteran leadership with fresh talent.
Summer Preparations
The senior is also part of a group of eleven players taking part in summer workouts, a period he describes as crucial for chemistry building. His mentorship extends off the court, where he leans on advice from former Siena point guard Zek Tekin, who recommended the transfer.
Beyond the hardwood, Yildizoglu balances academics and athletics, pursuing a business degree while staying connected to his roots in Istanbul, Turkey, and maintaining ties to basketball hubs in Hungary, Debrecen, and beyond.
