The HBCU Swingman Classic, an annual showcase that gathers the nation’s most promising baseball talents from Historically Black Colleges and Universities, will feature three standout athletes from Alabama A&M University this summer. The game is scheduled for July 10 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia and will be aired live on the MLB Network at 6 p.m. Eastern.
Alabama A&M’s latest crop of stars
Alabama A&M’s baseball program has continued to grow, and the selection of three players underscores the university’s rising profile in collegiate baseball.
Brycen Hammonds, a graduate of Bob Jones High School, arrives after a season in which he compiled 59 hits, including nine doubles and six home runs, batting .278 across 54 games. His consistent contact hitting has made him a cornerstone of the lineup.
Right‑hander Anthony Mateo, who paced the team with 47 strikeouts while posting a 4‑6 record, also finished with a 6.52 earned run average over 77.1 innings. His ability to miss bats has drawn attention from scouts watching the upcoming event.
Utility player Tervell Johnson contributed an .268 batting average with 41 hits, eight home runs and 39 runs batted in, providing both power and run‑production for the Bulldogs.
A platform for HBCU excellence
The Classic brings together the top 50 players from across the HBCU landscape, offering a national stage that highlights the talent pipeline emerging from historically Black institutions. For many participants, the exposure can translate into professional opportunities and increased visibility for their programs.
