Search Effort Expands Across Barrier Islands
The discovery of a body near the area where 18‑year‑old Nolan Xavier Wells was last seen has intensified a coordinated search that involves the United Cajun Navy, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, the United States Coast Guard, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources and the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department. Aerial reconnaissance and surface vessels have been deployed to comb the waters around Horn Island, Ship Island and the nearby Chandelier Islands.
Wells was reported missing on Saturday afternoon after he was seen conversing with a young woman on the north end of Horn Island, a barrier island off the Mississippi Gulf Coast. He was part of a group of friends who had traveled to the island for a holiday outing and was last observed around 3 p.m. local time. Despite extensive ground and water operations, the remains have not yet been positively identified.
Wells’s mother, Christine Wonsley, has taken to Facebook to share photographs of her son and to plead for any information that might shed light on his disappearance. Her posts have drawn thousands of shares, underscoring the community’s concern and the urgency of the case.
