Former WVU Star Kerr Kriisa Charged in Multi-Million Dollar Wire Fraud

The Estonian guard’s alleged scheme targeted investors with fabricated emergencies, leading to federal charges and extradition

A Scheme on the Court and Beyond

Former West Virginia University guard Kerr Kriisa, a 24‑year‑old Estonian who once wore the Mountaineers’ jersey, now faces five counts of wire fraud after prosecutors say he duped investors out of nearly $2.2 million.

Court filings reveal that Kriisa created a web of false identities, sending emails and text messages that claimed urgent medical emergencies, funeral costs, and other personal crises to persuade victims to transfer cash. In several instances he asked the same donor to repeat the contribution, and even redirected money to a second victim under a fabricated pretext.

Arrest and Detention

The FBI apprehended Kriisa in Fayette County, Kentucky, and he was held at the Fayette County Detention Center before being transferred to West Virginia to answer the charges. He remains in custody as the legal process moves forward.

Prosecutors point to a cache of correspondence that includes five distinct wire transfers, each tied to a specific false narrative. One document, signed in April 2025, shows Kriisa promising to repay a victim $100,000 by February 2026, a pledge that was later deemed part of the fraud.

Kriisa’s basketball résumé includes stints at the University of Arizona, the University of Kentucky and the University of Cincinnati, and he was once a member of the Kentucky alumni collective known as “La Familia.” The group later removed him, a detail that underscores the abrupt end to his collegiate career.

The government is also seeking a money judgment that would reclaim any proceeds traceable to the alleged offenses, a figure that mirrors the $2.2 million alleged loss. The case highlights how a promising athlete can fall into a pattern of deception that ensnares both personal and financial networks.
