A Season of Redemption
The Little River girls basketball program has long been a benchmark for excellence in Kansas, boasting storied volleyball and basketball teams that have repeatedly challenged the state's top competition. This season, the squad finally broke a lingering drought, securing the 1A Division 1 state championship for the first time since 1998 and adding a fifth title to the school's storied legacy.
The road to the championship was anything but straightforward. After falling short in the state finals in each of the previous two years — once to Doniphan West and again to Centralia — the team entered the current season with a renewed sense of purpose. Motivated by those close calls, they fought through a demanding schedule, confronting opponents from a variety of classifications and emerging as a resilient, battle‑tested unit.
At the helm of this resurgence was Coach Cy Rolfs, whose strategic adjustments and steady leadership earned him the distinction of area coach of the year. Under his guidance, the team blended disciplined defense with an up‑tempo offense, allowing them to close out tight games and build momentum heading into the tournament.
Senior standout Arika Feldman was the catalyst of that momentum, capturing the area player of the year award for her all‑around impact. Feldman averaged 19 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.3 steals, 2 assists and 1.9 blocked shots per game, and she delivered a career‑high 28‑point performance in the semifinal against Centralia, a game in which she also grabbed eight rebounds and swatted away two shots. Her ability to elevate her play when it mattered most was instrumental in the team's championship run.
Feldman's achievements extend beyond high school. She has committed to continue her basketball career at Fort Hays State, a program known for its competitive spirit and academic rigor. The move marks the next chapter of a career defined by relentless work ethic and clutch performances.
The championship game itself was a showcase of the team's growth, as they avenged an earlier loss to Centralia, routed Wabaunsee and dispatched Central Plains en route to the title. The victory was celebrated not only by the players and coaching staff but also by a community that has long taken pride in its athletic tradition.
