Kate Martin, the Iowa Hawkeye who helped lead the team to back‑to‑back national title appearances, has officially earned a standard contract with the Los Angeles Sparks after catching the eye of coaches during limited minutes on the court.
The former Las Vegas Aces draft pick was previously waived by the Golden State Valkyries, but after a brief stint she was signed to a Player Development agreement on May 10 and subsequently added to the Sparks roster, a move confirmed by the franchise’s front office.
A New Chapter in Martin’s Career
The Sparks are known for a fast‑paced offensive scheme that emphasizes three‑point shooting, though their defensive consistency has been a concern this season. General Manager Raegan Pebley highlighted Martin’s impact both on the hardwood and in the locker room, noting that her presence adds depth and professionalism.
Martin brings a rare blend of statistics to the franchise; she is the first player in Hawkeyes history to amass over 900 points, 500 rebounds, 400 assists, 120 steals and 60 blocks in a career. In her final college season she averaged 13.1 points on 50% shooting, including 37% from beyond the arc, while pulling down 6.8 rebounds and serving as a versatile defender.
