CSUN Women’s Soccer Captures Big West Regular-Season Title

A turnaround guided by Coach Gina Brewer sees the Matadors set program records and finish atop the conference

When the 2025 women's soccer season began, few expected the California State University, Northridge Matadors to contend for a conference crown. Predicted to finish ninth in the Big West, the team instead surged to the top of the standings, finishing the regular season with a program-record seven consecutive shutouts and a 0.40 goals-against average in league play.

A Season Defined by Defense

Head coach Gina Brewer, now in her third year, orchestrated the turnaround, earning her second Big West Coach of the Year honor. Under her guidance, the Matadors posted a .900 save percentage in conference matches, a statistic that ranked first across the league.

Offensively, senior forward Cailey Jackson led the attack with five goals and 13 points, while classmates Paige Califf, Sydney Lipkin, Jordyn Canister and Lia Peterson contributed crucial depth. Senior goalie Riley Liebsack guarded the net for every minute of the season, posting a 0.79 goals-against average.

The Matadors' historic run culminated in a semifinal clash with UC Santa Barbara, where their championship hopes were halted. Despite the loss, the team’s performance cemented its place in program history, tying the school record for Big West victories and setting new defensive benchmarks.

Coach Brewer’s impact extended beyond the field, as the achievement marked the third time a Matador head coach has captured the Big West Coach of the Year award. The season’s success has sparked optimism for future campaigns and reinforced the program’s rising stature within the conference.
