A revamped coaching staff
Iowa State University announced that it has completed the roster of coaches who will lead the men’s basketball program for the 2026‑27 season, confirming a blend of familiar faces and fresh talent under head coach T.J. Otzelberger.
Chuck Ruffing, a veteran assistant who most recently served at Western Illinois and previously headed the Bryant‑Stratton College program in Wisconsin, joins the staff as an assistant coach. His 52‑17 record at Bryant‑Stratton and the team’s first NJCAA national tournament appearance underscore his developmental impact.
The university also welcomed Richardson Maitre and Fletcher McGarvey as graduate assistants. Maitre, who earned professional playing experience in Spain and Portugal before turning to coaching, brings an international perspective, while McGarvey steps up from a three‑year managerial stint with the Cyclones.
Returning assistants Nate Schmidt, Erik Crawford, Tim Buckley and Allan Hanson will continue to provide continuity, while Thomas Pollard transitions to director of recruiting and Diante Garrett assumes the role of director of player development, reshaping the program’s recruitment and athlete‑support strategies.
The reshaped staff reflects a deliberate effort to combine proven winning experience with fresh ideas, positioning Iowa State for a competitive season ahead.
