A Summer Surge in Youth Hockey
When Meg Cline launched North Raleigh Field Hockey, she imagined a modest summer camp for girls in elementary and middle school. What unfolded instead was a vibrant community where girls from across the Triangle gathered to learn the fundamentals of field hockey, develop confidence on the turf, and forge friendships that extend beyond the game.
The league’s debut season quickly proved its impact. Participants not only mastered basic stick handling and positional play, but also experienced the camaraderie that comes from shared effort. Parents and coaches alike noted a noticeable jump in skill levels, with many girls now eyeing high school or club teams as a natural next step.
Building on that momentum, the organization is rolling out a series of summer sessions and one‑hour small‑group skill clinics. The first session kicks off on May 20, offering a structured curriculum that blends technical drills with game‑sense scenarios, all under the guidance of experienced coaches.
A Coach With Deep Roots
Cline’s own journey began at age seven, when she first picked up a stick in a local park. She later played collegiately at Davidson College, where she honed a tactical mindset that she now brings to her coaching. Over the years, she has led teams in North Carolina, Virginia, and even a stint in Chicago, accumulating a breadth of experience that shapes the league’s instructional philosophy.
Beyond the field, the program has become a social hub. Girls who might otherwise have missed out on organized sport now find a place to belong, and the league’s online updates keep families connected throughout the season. As the summer progresses, Cline hopes the initiative will continue to expand, planting the seeds for a new generation of players in the region.
