The Virginia High School League (VHSL) revealed this week that the 2026 state football championships will see a notable shift in venue geography. For the first time, the Class 3 and Class 4 title games are slated to be played in Salem, Virginia, on Friday, December 11, while the traditional Class 1 and Class 2 contests will follow on Saturday, December 12. The higher‑division Class 5 and Class 6 finals will remain at James Madison University, also on December 12.
A New Format for the State Finals
The change reflects a broader effort to distribute the championship atmosphere across the Commonwealth and to accommodate growing demand for larger venues. Salem, long known for its historic sites and growing sports infrastructure, will now serve as the central hub for the middle‑tier classifications.
Historically, the Class 3 and 4 championships have been anchored at Liberty University’s Williams Stadium since at least 2010, barring the disrupted 2020 season and the 2016‑17 years when William & Mary’s Zable Stadium stepped in. The recent decision marks a departure from that long‑standing arrangement, signaling a strategic pivot toward a centralized location for those divisions.
Local officials in Salem have expressed enthusiasm about the prospect of welcoming teams, families, and media to the city, citing the region’s hotel capacity and transportation links. Meanwhile, the VHSL board will monitor attendance figures and logistical outcomes before considering further adjustments for future seasons.
