The 80th edition of the OVAC Rudy Mumley All-Star Football Game is set for Saturday, July 18, at Wheeling Island Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
The showcase pits the top seniors from Ohio against their West Virginia counterparts, a tradition that dates back to the first contest in 1938.
The St. Clairsville Buckeyes, who finished the regular season at 8‑4 and advanced to the second round of the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s Division V, Region 17 playoffs, will be represented by their entire coaching staff.
Leading the Buckeyes is longtime head coach Brett McLean, who has guided the Red Devils for 25 years and amassed 206 career victories.
McLean’s stewardship was recognized in 2012 when he earned the OHSAA Division IV Coach of the Year honor, a testament to his consistent excellence.
Joining McLean are assistants Chris Balog, a St. Clairsville alumnus in his tenth year on the sideline, and Chris Fogle, who brings 14 years of coaching experience, eight of them as an assistant at St. Clairsville.
Ben Frye, a two‑time Defensive Assistant Coach of the Year in 2021 and 2024, adds his expertise after 22 seasons of varied responsibilities.
Eric Gay, a veteran of 15 years with the program, and Don Giffin, who has served as an assistant for 25 years, round out a deep bench of talent.
Stephen Hicks, in his 14th season as an assistant, and John Kucher, who began his coaching career 22 years ago and has spent the last seven years with the Red Devils, further reinforce the staff’s depth.
Byron Mayers, now in his third year with the team, and Kevin Sacco, who has been part of the program for 29 years, including 28 as an assistant coach, round out the coaching contingent.
The coaching staff will be complemented by longtime equipment manager Chris Patrone, who celebrates 29 years of service, and managers Beau McLean, Hudson Pastor, Luca Hicks, and Max Frye.
Historically, Ohio leads the all‑time series 46‑31‑2, but last year West Virginia edged Ohio 15‑14 as time expired, adding a dramatic twist to the rivalry.
St. Clairsville finished second to Indian Creek in the OVAC Class 4A standings, underscoring the competitive nature of the league.
The upcoming game will feature players from a wide geographic footprint, including athletes from Brooke, Bellaire, Bridgeport, Cadiz, Martins Ferry, Follansbee, Brownsville, Steubenville and surrounding communities, reflecting the broader regional interest.
