Jackson State’s 2023 recruiting class, once heralded as a potential turning point, has been dramatically reshaped since the start of the season. Of the 21 prospects that signed that year, only three remain on the roster, while the rest have either transferred or exhausted their eligibility.
A Roster in Flux
The most prominent departures include Ahmad Miller, who topped the SWAC with 1,054 rushing yards in 2025 before moving on to Syracuse, and Isaiah Spencer, the team’s leading receiver in 2024 with 660 yards, who transferred to Ole Miss. Jace Ward, a tight end turned edge rusher, also left for Prairie View A&M, while Stanley Cooks II stands as the sole returning defensive lineman with experience from the 2023 cohort.
Other contributors who have moved on include Davis, who started every game at right tackle and earned All‑SWAC second‑team honors, and White, who opened the season at right guard before an injury relegated him to a backup role. D'Andre Townes‑Blue, a two‑time first‑team All‑SWAC selection, and Javarian Jenkins, who logged 23 tackles in 19 games for JSU, round out the list of players whose journeys have taken them elsewhere.
Despite the churn, the program’s recruiting pedigree remains notable. The 2023 class was ranked No. 133 nationally, the 2024 cohort slipped to No. 147, and the 2025 group fell to No. 160, while the incoming 2026 class currently sits at No. 158. The shifting landscape reflects both the competitive nature of the SWAC and the broader challenges faced by historically black colleges and universities in retaining top talent.
