A promising career derailed
Brandon Aiyuk burst onto the NFL scene as a 2020 first‑round pick out of Arizona State, quickly becoming one of the most dynamic receivers in the NFC West. In 2022 he logged 78 receptions for 1,015 yards and eight touchdowns, and the following year he and quarterback Brock Purdy formed one of the league’s most efficient duos, connecting on 75 catches for 1,342 yards and seven scores that helped the 49ers reach the Super Bowl. His performance earned him AP second‑team All‑Pro and PFF first‑team honors, cementing his status as a cornerstone of San Francisco’s offense.
The 2024 campaign, however, unraveled early. After signing a four‑year, $120 million extension, Aiyuk’s production stalled, and a Week 7 collision with the Kansas City Chiefs left him with a torn ACL and MCL. He managed only 25 catches for 374 yards and no touchdowns in seven games before landing on the reserve/left squad list.
Compounding the injury woes, Aiyuk’s social media activity has drawn sharp criticism. He recently insulted Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels on Instagram, a move that alienated teammates and management and intensified scrutiny of his off‑field conduct.
Future in doubt
The fallout has been swift. General manager John Lynch confirmed that Aiyuk’s days in San Francisco are likely numbered, noting that the team may seek to recoup $13.8 million to $18.4 million in signing‑bonus money after voiding $27 million of guaranteed 2026 salary. Fantasy analysts now label his 2026 outlook as bleak, citing a severe knee injury, months of inactivity, a lack of representation and a social‑media profile that appears to be scaring off potential suitors.
