Duke Prepares to Rebuild Defensive Unit for 2026
Duke University’s football program is turning its attention to a comprehensive rebuild of the defensive side of the ball as the 2026 season approaches. After a 2025 campaign that fell short of expectations, head coach Manny Diaz, celebrated for his defensive acumen, has already begun reshaping the roster with an eye toward restoring the unit that once helped the Blue Devils capture the ACC title in 2024.
The defense, which had been among the conference’s elite two years ago, struggled to find consistency last year, prompting Diaz to pursue a series of strategic transfers. The coaching staff believes that adding experienced talent from across the Power Five will provide the depth and physicality needed to compete again, even as the offense is expected to cede much of its former firepower.
Key Additions
Among the most anticipated arrivals is Che Ojarikre, a secondary prospect who transferred from Stanford University. Ojarikre brings a Power Conference pedigree and a track record of flashes of brilliance during his time with the Cardinal, making him a candidate to become a cornerstone of Duke’s revamped secondary.
The influx of new faces extends beyond Ojarikre, with a cadre of newcomers such as Jonathan Patke, Darian Mensah and Walker Eget joining the fray. Their presence has injected a sense of optimism, yet it also underscores the uncertainty that surrounds how quickly chemistry can develop within a unit that must shoulder the team’s expectations.
While the defensive overhaul offers a promising blueprint, the road ahead will hinge on how quickly the new pieces mesh and whether the unit can sustain performance over a full season. If successful, the defense could once again become the engine that drives Duke’s pursuit of another ACC championship.
