Pueblo’s Historic ‘Slab’ Basketball Court Earns State Award After $500,000 Renovation

The revitalized court, funded by Colorado Lottery proceeds, will be honored at a public ceremony and is now a contender for the People's Choice Award.

Award-Winning Revival

The weathered concrete of Pueblo’s longtime basketball hub, affectionately known as 'The Slab', has been given a fresh start. After a comprehensive renovation that included a new paint job, upgraded hoops and energy‑efficient LED lighting, the court is once again ready for pickup games and community events.

The makeover, which carried a price tag of nearly $500,000, was financed through the Colorado Lottery’s dedicated fund for public recreation projects. The investment not only restored the court’s visual appeal but also modernized its infrastructure to serve future generations.

Pueblo Parks and Recreation announced that the effort has been honored with the 2026 Starburst Award, presented by the state’s lottery commission. Director Steven Meier accepted the accolade, expressing pride in the collaborative work that brought the project to life.

A dedication ceremony will be held on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the courts along North Elizabeth, inviting residents, families and local artists to celebrate the transformation. The event will showcase the work of four Pueblo painters who contributed murals that now adorn the surrounding walls.

Beyond the award, the revitalized Slab has been nominated for the People’s Choice Award, a statewide competition that highlights standout lottery‑funded initiatives. Voters across Colorado can cast their support online, helping to further spotlight the power of community‑driven recreation.
