A Dream 52 Years in the Making
The 2026 Poplarville baseball squad is set to contest the state championship, marking the first occasion in over half a century that the Hornets have reached this final.
A Roster of Juniors Defying Expectations
What makes the run especially striking is the composition of the team: it is dominated by juniors, with no seniors on the roster, and is built on a foundation of relentless work ethic and steady improvement.
Overcoming Early Setbacks
Their journey to the title game was not straightforward. After dropping early playoff games to Greene County and Newton County, the Hornets adopted the mantra "Never stop fighting" to rally themselves and eventually captured the South State championship with a 9‑1 victory over West Lauderdale, a performance highlighted by junior pitcher Luke Sones.
Sones, alongside teammates Jett Smith, Chase Sones, Braxton Sones, Trip Jones and Ashley Graeter, has emerged as a key figure, but the success is credited to collective effort rather than individual talent alone.
Beyond the diamond, the players have forged strong bonds, spending countless hours together in practice and off‑field activities, supporting one another through the pressures of a historic season.
For many of them, a state championship ring would represent more than a trophy; it would fulfill a childhood dream and cement a legacy for Poplarville baseball.
The community watches with anticipation, hoping the title will bring pride to the city and inspire future generations.
