Valley Teams Gear Up for State Tournament Openers

Eighteen local squads across baseball, softball and soccer enter bracket play, with several high‑stakes matchups slated for early week games.

The Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association unveiled the brackets for this year’s state tournaments in baseball, softball and boys soccer, setting the stage for a busy week of competition across the Yakima Valley.

Among the highlighted seeds, West Valley’s baseball squad earned the fourth position in its division and will meet No. 13 Issaquah in a contest expected to take place at Zaepfel Stadium, while Davis’ boys soccer team also secured a fourth seed and will host the same Issaquah side at home.

Opening Round Highlights

Three Valley soccer teams are slated to open at home on Tuesday or Wednesday, with East Valley welcoming No. 12 Sehome, Wapato facing No. 20 Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) and Toppenish traveling to take on No. 8 Nathan Hale. In softball, West Valley will open against No. 3 Issaquah at Richland’s Columbia Playfields on Friday morning, while East Valley meets No. 11 Archbishop Murphy at Carlon Park and Selah confronts No. 7 Ridgefield at the same venue.

Naches Valley’s softball team must defeat No. 5 Elma in Richland to stay alive, a win that would set up a Friday quarterfinal against No. 4 College Place. Meanwhile, Kittitas captured the second seed in the 2B bracket and will host No. 15 Okanogan, and Sunnyside Christian will begin the 1B tournament on Tuesday at home against No. 10 Crosspoint Christian.

Zillah returns to the 1A bracket as the seventh seed and will square off against the combined Overlake/Bear Creek team at Cashmere, while Naches Valley prepares to travel to face No. 3 Lynden Christian in the same division.

With eighteen Valley teams spread across multiple classifications, the early round schedule promises a cascade of local derbies and potential upsets, underscoring the region’s depth and the stakes that will shape the remainder of the state tournaments.
