NYC Launches Free Overnight Soccer Leagues Across All Boroughs

Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s NYC Open Play transforms public spaces into nighttime sports hubs ahead of the USMNT’s World Cup match.

Midnight soccer lights up the boroughs

When the city that never sleeps turns its attention to the world’s most popular sport, the result is a midnight soccer league that stretches from Manhattan’s Chelsea Waterside to Staten Island’s Fairview Park.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the launch of NYC Open Play, a free overnight pickup soccer initiative that will run through July 18, offering small‑sided pitches equipped with goals, cones and balls in each borough.

The program is a collaborative effort involving New York City FC, NYC Footy, NYC Parks and the Hudson River Park Trust, with staff from NYC Footy organizing teams and assigning fields across the city.

Games typically start around 10:30 p.m., allowing participants to play into the early morning while security personnel are stationed at each location to ensure safety.

The initiative’s timing coincides with the USMNT’s recent loss to Belgium in the FIFA World Cup, adding a local narrative that links the city’s soccer enthusiasm to the national team’s performance.

In a separate announcement, Mamdani revealed that NJ/NY Gotham FC will relocate to Etihad Park in 2028, creating the first dedicated soccer stadium in the five boroughs and sharing the venue with New York City FC.
