A Legacy of Leadership
Sly Slaughter ended a 13‑year tenure as head coach of Orrville’s boys basketball program, a period marked by four district championships and two District Coach of the Year honors. His most celebrated achievement came in 2010 when he guided the team to the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division III state championship game, cementing his place in the school’s basketball lore.
A 1993 graduate of Orrville High School, Slaughter once wore the same jersey that helped the school capture its own state title that year, playing guard on the championship squad. His deep roots in the community have been evident both on the court and now in the hallway of Orrville Middle School, where he will assume the role of principal.
Mike Huberty, who has served as Slaughter’s assistant for the past two seasons and previously coached the freshman team, was announced as the new head coach. At 26, Huberty steps into the role with a clear vision, emphasizing a defensive mindset and a transition‑offense philosophy that he believes will position the team for sustained success.
Huberty’s appointment comes after a period of transition for the program. He has expressed confidence in his readiness, citing the experience gained alongside Slaughter and his own developmental work with younger players. The school board and athletic department have voiced support for his plan to build a strong defensive foundation while maintaining an up‑tempo style.
The leadership change reflects a seamless hand‑off within the school’s basketball ecosystem. Slaughter’s move to principal duties ensures continuity in the school’s athletic philosophy, while Huberty’s fresh perspective aims to carry forward the program’s competitive edge. Both men share a commitment to the Orrville community, a factor that has resonated throughout the recent announcements.
