A New Era for the Marauders
Ryan O’Flaherty, now 38, has officially taken over as head football coach at St. Peter’s Prep in New Jersey, ending a decade-long apprenticeship that began when he first set foot on campus in 2011.
His ascent has been rooted in the school’s culture; he played for veteran coach Rob Stern at Hudson Catholic before returning to coach, first as offensive coordinator under Rich Hansen III, and most recently as a teacher and assistant.
O’Flaherty grew up in Jersey City, a background that gives him a personal stake in the program’s success, and he has long envisioned a day when he could lead the Marauders from the sidelines.
The team’s recent history reflects both struggle and promise: after a Non‑Public A semifinal loss to St. Joseph (Montvale) last year, the Marauders stumbled through 2023 and 2024, but showed measurable improvement and a growing sense of cohesion.
Central to that turnaround is Olu Olubobola, an offensive tackle ranked among New Jersey’s elite prospects, who has committed to Notre Dame, underscoring the program’s ability to attract top talent despite the competitive recruiting landscape.
O’Flaherty is acutely aware of the transfer portal’s influence, yet he stresses that St. Peter’s Prep maintains a rigorous academic and athletic standard, using the portal strategically rather than surrendering to its pressures.
His vision centers on rebuilding a program that can consistently compete with the state’s traditional powerhouses, blending disciplined play with the flexibility needed in today’s dynamic college‑football environment.
