Texas Tech football enters the 2025 campaign as the preseason favorite to win the Big 12 again, riding the wave of a championship that arrived just a year earlier.
Preseason Media Days in Frisco
During the first day of Big 12 media days at The Star in Frisco, Texas, linebacker Ben Roberts emphasized that the team will not rely on predictions but will focus on preparation and execution.
Tight end Terrance Carter Jr. expressed excitement about being selected as the top team in the conference, while quarterback A.J. Holmes Jr. highlighted the importance of teammates in elevating individual performance.
The roster returns seven offensive starters and six defensive starters from the previous season, and the program has added several highly regarded transfers from the NCAA portal to bolster depth.
Defensively, Texas Tech boasts one of the nation’s best units, with six players earning preseason All‑Big 12 honors. Ben Roberts was named the most outstanding player of last year’s Big 12 championship game, and A.J. Holmes Jr. received second‑team All‑America recognition from The Associated Press.
Holmes believes that great players rise when surrounded by strong teammates, a sentiment echoed by Carter, who sees multiple candidates for defensive player of the year within the squad.
The 2025 campaign will also be a chance at redemption. The team’s 2024 season ended with a loss to Oregon in the Orange Bowl, cutting short what many expected to be a historic run. Now the players are determined to finish what they started and achieve the goals set at the start of the year.
