A New Era for Women’s Baseball
The Women’s Pro Baseball League (WPBL) is set to launch its inaugural season on August 1, marking the first professional women’s baseball circuit in North America since the historic All‑American Girls Professional Baseball League folded in 1954.
Four franchises will compete in a seven‑week schedule that runs through mid‑September, with each club playing 15 games at Robin Roberts Stadium in Springfield, Illinois.
Trailblazers Behind the Team Names
Boston Hunters honor Harriot K. Hunt, the first woman to apply to Harvard Medical School, while New York Heights pay tribute to civil‑rights leader Dorothy Irene Height. San Francisco Firebells celebrate Lillie Hitchcock Coit, a champion of the city’s volunteer firefighters, and Los Angeles Queens commemorate Lizzie Murphy, nicknamed the “Queen of the Diamond.”
The league’s logo for the Boston Hunters features an osprey clutching a baseball bat, a visual nod to the city’s maritime heritage and the team’s fierce spirit.
A Milestone for the Sport
WPBL Commissioner Justine Siegal emphasized that the league not only provides a platform for elite female athletes but also strengthens the ecosystem of women’s baseball in the United States, complementing the success of the national team that captured the first two Women’s World Cup titles in 2004 and 2006.
With support from USA Baseball and a growing fan base, the WPBL aims to inspire the next generation of players and spectators, proving that professional baseball can be both inclusive and exhilarating.
