A League Built on Legacy
The Women's Professional Baseball League (WPBL) has unveiled the nicknames and logos of its four franchises ahead of a historic inaugural season, each team name paying tribute to a trailblazing woman whose legacy helped shape American sport and society.
The San Francisco Firebells, Los Angeles Queens, New York Heights, and Boston Hunters will open play on August 1 in Springfield, Illinois, before a tightly scheduled run that stretches into the latter half of September, featuring a full regular season followed by playoffs.
Kelsie Whitmore, celebrated for her dominance on the mound, has committed to the Firebells, bringing her elite pitching repertoire to the West Coast squad.
Mo'ne Davis, the teenage sensation who captured national attention in Little League, will patrol center field for the Los Angeles Queens, adding a dynamic presence to the lineup.
The New York Heights draw inspiration from Dorothy Irene Height, a towering figure in the civil rights and women’s rights movements, embodying the league’s commitment to social progress.
Meanwhile, the San Francisco Firebells honor Lillie Hitchcock Coit, the beloved “Firebelle” who championed the city’s volunteer firefighters, while the Boston Hunters reflect the pioneering spirit of Dr. Harriot K. Hunt, a physician who broke barriers for women in medicine.
The Los Angeles Queens also commemorate Lizzie Murphy, known as the “Queen of the Diamond,” whose early feats on the baseball diamond paved the way for future generations of female players.
Games will be held at Robin Roberts Stadium, a venue named after the Hall of Fame pitcher whose career helped popularize women’s baseball in the mid‑20th century.
League officials say the WPBL seeks to recreate the camaraderie and visibility that the All‑American Girls Professional Baseball League enjoyed seven decades ago, offering a new platform for elite women athletes to showcase their talent.
Fans can expect a competitive schedule that blends intense matchups with community outreach events, as the league works to inspire the next wave of girls to pick up a bat and dream big.
