Preseason Honors Signal Bright Outlook

Marshall University’s football program received a boost as Athlon Sports unveiled its 2026 Preseason All‑Sun Belt Conference teams, honoring twelve members of the Herd.

Quarterback Carlos Del Rio‑Wilson headlines the First Team, recognized for his all‑around prowess and a record‑breaking 661 rushing yards last season, a mark that also placed him atop the conference in rushing yards per game.

Tight end Toby Payne and offensive lineman Jalen Slappy join him on the First Team, while defensive back Daytione Smith earned his spot after posting 50 tackles and three interceptions in 2025.

Additional Herd players collected honors on the Second, Third and Fourth Teams, including wide receiver Adrian Norton, who logged 27 receptions for 363 yards and five touchdowns, and return specialist Xayvion Turner‑Bradshaw, who amassed 510 kick‑return yards at an average of 22.5 yards per return.

Running back Jo’Shon Barbie and linebacker Javae Gilmore were selected to the Third Team, and the Fourth Team features wide receiver De’Andre Tamarez, transfer lineman Xavier Bausley and defensive lineman Braydin Ward.

Athlon Sports, a longtime partner of collegiate athletics, collaborates with Marshall University to spotlight these prospects, underscoring the program’s growing influence in the Sun Belt landscape.
