USC Upstate announced this week that Jake Armsey will join the Spartans baseball program as its new Director of Player Development. The move comes as the program looks to build on a recent surge of success that has seen it capture consecutive Big South Tournament championships and earn multiple NCAA Regional berths.
A Strategic Addition for the Program
Armsey brings five years of experience as a Spartan infielder, during which he helped the team secure back‑to‑back Big South Tournament titles and advance to the NCAA Regionals on two occasions. He capped his playing career by starting all 64 games in his final season and posting a .305/.405/.432 slash line, while also setting Division I era career records for runs (138) and walks (105).
Coach Kane Sweeney praised the hire, saying, "Jake’s deep understanding of our system and his proven track record of development make him the ideal person to guide our players both on and off the field." Sweeney, who has led the program for several seasons, emphasized that Armsey’s appointment aligns with the university’s broader strategy to enhance player growth and competitiveness.
In his new role, Armsey will oversee player recruitment, integrate strength and conditioning initiatives, and provide academic support for the baseball roster. His recent graduation with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Business Administration in 2025 equips him with skills that the university hopes will translate into stronger connections with alumni and community partners.
The addition of Armsey reflects a continued investment in the Spartans’ infrastructure, a trend that has been bolstered by recent facility upgrades at the Spartanburg campus and a growing fan base in the Upstate region. As the program looks ahead, the front office believes that Armsey’s blend of playing experience and academic achievement will help sustain the momentum generated over the past few seasons.
With the hiring of Jake Armsey, USC Upstate signals its intent to maintain a competitive edge in the Big South Conference and to provide a clear pathway for student‑athletes to excel both in the classroom and on the diamond.
