Al Riveron, who has overseen the Atlantic Coast Conference’s football officiating as its Supervisor of Football Officials for the past four years, announced his resignation this week, bringing an end to a tenure marked by a steadfast focus on integrity, preparation and teamwork.
The ACC confirmed that a nationwide search for Riveron’s replacement will commence immediately, signaling the conference’s commitment to maintaining the high standards he set for on‑field officiating.
Riveron’s journey to the ACC began long before his 2022 appointment. He first earned recognition as a referee in Conference USA and the Big East, breaking into major college football in 1990, and later transitioned to the National Football League in 2004, rising through the ranks to become a full‑time NFL referee in 2008.
His expertise was further leveraged when he joined Dean Blandino in the NFL front office in 2013 as senior director of officiating, eventually ascending to senior vice president of officiating from 2017 to 2020, roles in which he helped modernize the league’s officiating protocols.

A Miami native who arrived in the United States from Cuba at age five, Riveron often spoke of the values instilled by his immigrant experience, crediting them for his disciplined approach to the sport. Colleagues and peers have praised his collaborative style, noting that his emphasis on teamwork resonated across the conferences he served, and his departure marks the end of an era for ACC football officiating.
