Veteran coaches Joe Rydzewski and Jeff Damore aim to restore competitiveness

New leadership brings hope to Cardinal Mooney athletics

Cardinal Mooney High School in Chesterfield Township, Michigan, has announced the hiring of veteran coaches Joe Rydzewski and Jeff Damore to lead its baseball and softball teams respectively.

Rydzewski, a graduate of Heidelberg University and former professional player in the United Shore Professional Baseball League, returns to the high school ranks after stints at the collegiate level. He expressed confidence that his experience will help restore the baseball program to the success it enjoyed in previous years.

Damore, who brings 25 years of coaching expertise, has previously captured four Michigan state championships and a USA Softball GOLD 18U national title. He will revive the softball program, which was inactive this season, and guide the team as it prepares for competition in 2027.

Reviving dormant programs

Both coaches emphasized their enthusiasm for the new roles and the potential they see in their respective squads. Their appointments come as the school seeks to strengthen its athletic offerings across the region.

The moves also reflect a broader trend among local high schools, including Macomb Dakota, Sterling Heights Stevenson, and others, to invest in experienced leadership to boost competitiveness.

School officials highlighted the strategic choice of hiring coaches with proven track records, noting that the new staff will work closely with the administration and community to foster talent development.
