A New Chapter for the Cougars
Dovydas Buika, a 19‑year‑old Lithuanian guard, has officially committed to Brigham Young University, becoming the latest overseas prospect to join the Cougars’ growing roster.
Buika’s journey to Provo has been shaped by years in the Zalgiris Kaunas academy, where he honed his skills alongside future NBA talents such as Lonnie Walker IV and Isaiah Wong. After a loan spell at BC Jonava Hipocredit in the Lithuanian Basketball League, he earned a EuroLeague debut against ALBA Berlin and later showcased his abilities on the European stage at the FIBA U18 European Championship.
International Experience and NBA Connections
During that tournament he posted averages of 12 points, 5.9 rebounds and 4.9 assists, highlighted by a 26‑point outing against Latvia in which he shot 5‑for‑11 from three‑point range. His versatility allows him to operate as both a guard and a wing, making him a flexible piece for head coach’s plans.
The Cougars already welcome Tyler Betsey, Collin Chandler and Jake Wahlin as offseason additions, and Buika will compete for a spot in the rotation. His playmaking instincts and experience in high‑pressure environments position him as a potential key contributor as BYU aims to climb the West Coast Conference standings.
Buika’s résumé also includes participation in the NBA’s Basketball Without Borders camp in both 2024 and 2025, as well as representation of Lithuania at the senior level. He previously took official visits to Arizona and Illinois, underscoring the broad interest in his talents before electing to join the Cougars.
Beyond the statistics, coaches praise his basketball IQ and willingness to handle the ball, traits that could complement the existing backcourt and add depth to the team’s defensive schemes.
