USA Baseball Assumes Control of the BBCOR Standard
USA Baseball announced that it will take over the BBCOR (Bat‑Balance‑Optimized‑Response) standard from the NCAA beginning in 2027. The move is largely administrative, preserving the existing performance criteria while introducing a new USA BBCOR certification for high school and college baseball.
The new certification will maintain the same performance standards as the current BBCOR model but will broaden the range of approved drop‑weight options. High school players will now be able to choose bats with drop weights of -3, -4, -5, and -6, giving them a more gradual transition from youth to high‑school competition.
USA Baseball President John Gall emphasized that expanding drop‑weight options supports long‑term athlete development. "By offering additional flexibility, we give athletes more time to build strength and refine their swing mechanics, which can keep more players engaged in the sport," he said.
The transition schedule includes key milestones: USA BBCOR bats will become eligible for NCAA competition starting with the 2028 season, and all non‑wood bats used in NCAA play must display the USA BBCOR certification beginning January 1, 2029. The National Federation of State High School Associations has already approved the USABat -3 standard for high school baseball, and the new drop‑weight variants follow suit.
